Ironically, Tirana, the capital of Albania woke up covered by smog, dangerous gases and fumes on Earth Day. The urban waste recycling plant in Kashar caught fire around 10:00 in the morning. It is still to be investigated and determined the causes of the fire. The incident is considered as the greatest environmental catastrophe and air pollution in the capital.
The plant recycled plastic and was fined several times for violations of the working conditions and non-compliance with safety standards. The fumes released by the fire remained stagnant for hours over the capital. The fires were extinguished but the environmental damage is yet to be determined. The emission of gases and fumes needs to be monitored and assessed in order to take measures and protect the population from inhaling dangerous levels of toxic gas.
* Burning plastics containing substances like PVC are considered the most dangerous emissions, because of the harmful quantities of dioxine they release in the air. Dioxins are known as the most pernicious toxins human organisms.
